September 22, 2008 River Report PDF
There is still a lot of fishing ahead of us in 2008.  Fishing is excellent in the river right now with good catches of Kings and a few steelhead.  Fish are coming on both spawn and lures. Our steelhead fishing will continue to improve as more and more fish enter the river.   If you haven't spent a day on the river, you really need to try it. Contact one of our river guides for more information.

2008 Lake Michigan Summary PDF

2008 Manistee Lake Michigan wrap up fishing report

April \May

Brown Trout and Salmon did not show up in any quantities in Northeastern Lake Michigan. Most of the Browns spent the Winter & Spring on the other side of our Lake.

June

Steelhead, Salmon & Lake Trout showed up offshore from 100-600 feet of water at the surface thermal breaks. Fishing ran from just so-so to very good offshore. Stinger size spoons in Double Orange Crush, Steelie Stomper, and other medium size spoons seemed to work well.

July

Lots of fish here (Kings, Steelhead, & Lake Trout) but very few fishermen on lake.  It was possible that we had more fish in July then we did in August but not enough fishermen to catch them. The winds and water temperatures were steady with the fish often deep. Spin Doctors & Bechold Fish Catchers with Aqua Gold, & Riverside Flies working early with a new fly, Amy's Baby, working well after the sun got high.

August

Lots of fishermen & fish with winds that seemingly changed directions daily affecting the thermo clines.  Finding where the fish were and at what depth each day was a challenge. Half of the month found our fish within a mile of shore.  Silver Horde Ace High Glow plugs seemed to work for most of the month when the fish were shallow and a large attractor in white and also in green & silver with the same flies we use in July plus a new fly, called Jakestra working well when the fish were deep.

September

The water started to cool and the big fish started the month close to the harbor with very good fishing on plugs. By mid-month the south wind we needed in August started to blow and the Salmon, mostly 3 year olds, and some Steelhead were in 150 feet of water with the thermal break down 80 feet or so.

It is not too early to book your 2009 Lake Michigan charters. Remember our July fishery.

Fishing has continued to be fantastic with larger Kings than in the previous couple of years at least on average.  Fish have been coming on the the shelf early in the top 45 feet using plugs or flashers and flies.  Look for north winds to bring fish in close this weekend.

Week of 7\26\08 PDF

Fishing has gone from good to very, very good, some captains catching as many as 18 Salmon to just ok on Friday 5-8 Salmon to very tough this morning with 4-5 foot waves and finicky fish. We tried a new fly this week, called Amy’s Baby from KRW flies and it works very well in bright sunlight. KRW says it will be available this week in limited quantities in local stores. Fish catchers and flies worked well and the Canadian Plugs have started to work when the fish are in the upper 50 feet. Fish are coming from 60-220 feet of water and try from the 12’s to the 19’s. Reports from south of us are that there are lots of fish heading our way. August and September have the potential to be as good as the last two years.

Book now. You will find most captains have very limited days left.

Fishing has moved from good to great as the Kings are in Manistee in full force.  Fish are coming in the top 60 feet for the most part with a few fish taken deeper.  Flashers, Spoons and Plugs are all taking fish in 80-200 feet of water.  There is still time to charter with our quaility captains in one of the worlds best King Salmon Fisheries.

Fishing has been good when the wind isn't blowing.  With up to 5 foot seas the past couple of days and one boat sinking it has been tough but when you can fish it has been big fish.  Fish have been in 80-220 feet of water the past couple of days and coming about 80-90 down for the most part.  Flashers and flies along with some spoons and pugs have been good.  Looks like a steady weather pattern this coming week and there are still charters available with our qualified captains.

Saturday July 19, 2008 PDF
Fishing has remained good and the fish remain deep with most coming 100-150 down in 100-200 feet of water.  The were a few Lake Trout and Steelhead taken in deeper water fishing the surface to 150 down.  Sounds like this will be one of the best King seasons yet and there is still time to book a prime time charter with our professionals.

Sunday July 13, 2008 PDF
Despite some windy weather fishing remainded very good this weekend with Kings making up most of the boxes.  Fish were coming in 100-200 feet of water and being taken between 80 and 130 down.  Todays strong NW wind may have changed the temperature which we will find out tomorrow.  Morning and night bites have been the best.

Fishing remains very good with several Kings over 15# being taken.  The last few days we have been fishing from 80-200 feet of water with the fish coming 60-130 down.  Several Lake Trout are also being caught to make for a nice mixed box.  This is just the begining of the best King Salmon fishing which will continue through early September on Lake Michigan and then take off in the Big Mansitee river.  Now is the time to book that prime time charter with our experienced captains.
